Candidate for Re-Election — Cape May County Clerk
Rita M. Rothberg (formerly Fulginiti) has dedicated her career to public service in Cape May County, where she has worked in the County Clerk’s Office since 1985. First elected as County Clerk in 2005, she brings nearly four decades of institutional knowledge, leadership, and commitment to the role.
As County Clerk, Mrs. Rothberg is responsible for a wide range of essential government services. She oversees the recording and preservation of all real estate transactions in Cape May County and maintains a comprehensive archive of land and civil records dating back to 1692. Her office serves as the county’s official custodian of these historic and vital documents.
In her capacity as an election official, she plays a key role in administering fair and secure elections across the county. She is also a designated U.S. Passport agent and administers oaths of office and legal affirmations in accordance with New Jersey law. In addition to her statutory duties as County Clerk, Mrs. Rothberg serves as the County Adjuster, a critical human services role. In this capacity, she oversees the court-mandated commitments of psychiatric patients and coordinates arrangements for the burial of indigent individuals—ensuring that even the most vulnerable members of the community are treated with dignity and care.
A recognized leader in public records modernization, Mrs. Rothberg received the PARIS Grant Award for Excellence in 2007 from the New Jersey Secretary of State and the Archivist of the United States. This honor acknowledged her leadership in establishing Cape May County’s Records Recovery Center for Electronic Records—an innovative initiative that modernized and safeguarded vital public information for future generations.
Her commitment to public service extends beyond the Clerk’s Office. She currently serves on the Board of the Woodbine Developmental Center, advocating for individuals with developmental disabilities, and is Chair of the Cape Women’s Resource Fund, Inc., a nonprofit organization that promotes the advancement and recognition of women throughout Cape May County.
Mrs. Rothberg is a graduate of Atlantic Cape Community College, where she earned an Associate of Arts degree, and she holds the prestigious Certified Public Manager designation from the New Jersey Department of Personnel.
She resides in Dennis Township with her husband, Michael Rothberg, and their beloved pets. With decades of service and a lifelong commitment to Cape May County, Rita M. Rothberg continues to bring integrity, professionalism, and innovation to the Office of the County Clerk.
